New In-Clinic Technology Helps Prevent Diabetic Vision Loss

Every year, millions of people risk losing their vision to a preventable condition.
Diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes, is the leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults. Globally, it affects 7.7 million people—a number expected to double by 2050. But here’s the hopeful truth: with early detection, 95% of vision loss caused by diabetic retinopathy can be prevented.
The key is timely, accessible screening—and that’s where Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic is making a difference.
Until recently, patients in need of diabetic retinopathy screenings were referred to specialists outside our clinics. That process came with obstacles: paperwork, delays, long wait times, and—in underserved communities—a very real chance the appointment might never happen.
“We knew we had to do better,” said Dr. Priyanka Raut, Senior Director of Nursing at Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic. “That’s why we started looking into new options.”
Now, that better way is here.
With the introduction of RetinaVue devices across our network, patients can receive diabetic eye screenings during their regular clinic visit—in about five minutes. These devices take a high-quality image of the retina, which allows providers to detect early signs of retinopathy without sending patients elsewhere.
If a concern is detected, providers can begin discussing treatment right away—no additional appointments, no barriers, no time lost.
As of November 2024, 34 RetinaVue devices are now in use across 20 of our clinic locations in Washington and Oregon, available anywhere adult general medicine services are offered. This expansion means more patients can access this potentially sight-saving screening, without ever leaving the exam room.
“We’ve really invested in the health of our community,” said Dr. Raut. “This project shows our commitment to meeting people where they are and delivering care in ways that are convenient, effective, and equitable.”
By integrating this advanced technology directly into everyday care, Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic is making it easier than ever for patients to protect their vision—and take control of their long-term health.
